The Puja Yatra Asadha 2570 BE Parade is the Closing Series of the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting 2570 BE
The 2570 BE Puja Yatra Asadha procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple, Magelang Regency, Central Java is one of the peaks of the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC) 2570 BE agenda series.
Thousands of people consisting of monks, novices, priests and people from various regions accompany the Mahadhatu Golden Chariot, Relic Chariot, Tipitaka Chariot, and Dhammacakka Chariot or Dharma wheel which is a symbol depicting the moment when Gautama Buddha first preached the Dharma teachings at Isipatana Deer Park, which is the main meaning of Asadha Day.
While chanting the chants Buddhanussati, Dhammanussati, and Sanghanussati, devotees walk approximately 4,6 kilometers as a form of contemplation on the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. The Puja Yatra is also interpreted as a meditative practice and a tribute to the Triple Gem.
The Chairman of the ITC and Asalha Mahapuja General Committee, Bhikkhu Gutadhammo Mahathera, explained that the procession, or Puja Yatra, is a meaningful spiritual practice. During this procession, devotees walk with full awareness, calming their minds, and reflecting on the noble values of Buddhist teachings.
He said the procession is more than just walking. The congregation is encouraged to direct their thoughts to virtues, such as love, compassion, purity, and the wisdom of the Buddha. "This is part of Buddhanussati, which is contemplation on the greatness of the Buddha," he said on Sunday (July 26).
The Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting and Asalha Mahapuja are events organized by Sangha Theravada Indonesia (STI). This year's Asalha Mahapuja 2026 celebration carries the theme "Following the Noble Path, Contributing to the Nation."
The theme encourages Buddhists to practice Dharma values in their daily lives while making positive contributions to society and the nation. The sacred procession proceeded solemnly, attended by monks, Buddhists, and participants from various regions and countries.
Asalha Mahapuja in the Borobudur Temple area is also part of the effort to preserve Buddhist traditions and introduce Indonesia's cultural and spiritual richness to the international community.
