Borobudur Temple Welcomes Two Thousand Buddhists to Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting 2026

Borobudur Temple is ready to welcome around 2.000 Buddhists from various regions in Indonesia who will take part in the 2026 Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC) series and the peak of the Asadha Mahapuja celebration in the Borobudur Temple area, Magelang, Central Java.

Carrying the theme "Treading the Noble Path, Contributing to the Nation", the activity, which took place on July 24–26, 2026, became a momentum for Buddhists to deepen their appreciation of the Dhamma while reflecting on the role of virtuous values ​​in social, national, and state life.

As a UNESCO world heritage destination and one of the spiritual centers of the world's Buddhists, Borobudur Temple has once again become a space that brings together the values ​​of cultural preservation with the practice of spiritual life that takes place in a solemn, orderly, and meaningful manner.

InJourney Destination Management (IDM) has prepared various operational aspects to ensure the smooth running of the entire series of activities. During the event, IDM made various operational adjustments. On July 25, 2026, access to Borobudur Temple during sessions 7 and 8 (3:00 PM–6:00 PM) and the sunset session will be canceled. Meanwhile, tourists can still visit the Borobudur Temple grounds.

Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting is the tradition of continuous recitation of the Tipitaka scriptures, which has become an important activity for Buddhists in Indonesia. Recitation of these scriptures serves as a means of deepening Buddhist teachings and a collective prayer for peace, harmony, and the well-being of the nation.

The culmination of the event will be the Asadha Mahapuja, a Buddhist holy day commemorating Gautama Buddha's first sermon on the Dhamma to five ascetics at Isipatana Park in Sarnath, India. This occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of practicing the values ​​of wisdom, compassion, and devotion to others.

The theme "Treading the Noble Path, Contributing to the Nation" reflects the spirit of Buddhists to continue implementing the teachings of Dhamma in daily life through real contributions to society, environmental conservation, and strengthening national unity.

According to Mardijono Nugroho, holding spiritual activities at Borobudur is also part of an effort to provide quality, sustainable tourism and provide added value to the community.
